In Verdi’s Giovanna d’Arco (1845), Joan is cast as the soprano ingénue opposite two male characters, her Father, Giacomo who believes his daughter to be under the influence of the devil, and Charles the VII who falls in love with her. Verdi’s seventh opera Giovanna d’Arco (Joan of Arc) with a libretto by early Verdi collaborator Temistocle Solera who based the text loosely on Schiller’s work Die Jungfrau von Orleans features one of Verdi’s finest title roles. In this intriguing interpretation, Joan’s purity and virginity is accentuated and gone is her death at the stake but rather she dies from wounds sustained in battle as she achieves her salvation.
