This April 19-21 at the Plaza Theatre at the Boston Center for the Arts South End Campus, MetroWest Opera will produce Old | New | Borrowed | Blue, a double-bill of one-act operas that examines the tragic and comic sides of romance and marriage. The program includes Miss Havisham’s Wedding Night by Dominick Argento, and The Beautiful Bridegroom by Dan Shore.
Argento’s one-woman show is based on the famous character of Miss Havisham from Charles Dickens’ novel Great Expectations. Fixated and unhinged, alone in her room and still in her wedding dress, Miss Havisham recounts the events from the fateful day 50 years ago when her fiancé left her at the altar.
Beautiful Bridegroom is a comedy of errors. A middle-aged mother approaches a matchmaker. She’s not looking for matches for her two daughters, but a young and handsome companion for herself! Dan Shore’s composition is fun and funny, with many a wink and a nod to Mozart.
